  Life As We Know It
The girl that is supposed to accompany us to Texas this month
attempted suicide.
Her little sisters found her in her room, with cuts to her wrists and after she ingested a bottle of aspirin.
As I drove to the hospital to visit her, I thought of all the things we would talk about, because I could relate, I did the same thing at her age.
I'd tell her I understood.
That life can seem so overwhelming
That problems don't seem to ever end.
That I felt that guilt of thinking everything was all my fault.
The guilt of hurting my parents for making wrong choices.
The guilt of doing bad stuff when I was raised to do right, but not being able to say no
That relationships are hard no matter what age you are
but you can deal with it better later
I wanted to tell her, that even though the pain is so real and so pervasive
that this too, shall pass
I wanted her to realize that life goes on
and it gets better
And better
To look at me (she once said she thought my life was cool)
and to see that I am her, 15 years from now
That I WAS her, and grew up into happiness.
I wanted her to know
that everything is going to be okay.
And that life is worth living

But when I got there
she had friends and family with her
So I just kissed her hello
gave her flowers
and snacks and pictures of us together
Just small talk
I left feeling so disappointed

that is so sad...

i, too, could totally relate. when you are so young and the pain is just too unbearable, suicide seems an easy way out. but life does get better if you're willing to storm it through...

i hope she learns this...

The time may come when you'll still be able to share your thoughts. Don't feel bad for not being able to do it when you wanted to.

You get tougher from those things you survive. You did, and I am so glad you did, and so proud of you now.
The timing was not right, God will get you to her at the right time, please do this, she needs a friend she can talk to that understands.

Can you write her a letter? That way she can read it when she has time.

I feel for her. Life is not easy but you are right, this too shall pass. It always does.

God Bless!

I think Jodi's idea of a letter or a card with what you want to say written inside is an excellent idea - so she'll have it for whenever she needs strength.

I knew you were in her life for a reason. This must have been so shocking and sad. Thank God she survived. Hopefully she has hit bottom and you will help her to get back up again.

All these things we all have in our personal histories, slowly coming out as life allows us to tell our stories as we relate the now to the past...

I'm glad you survived, too, Sandy. You're a good friend and you've come so far. Imagining this world without you and all that you've made possible - your family and your kind words, is sad. I'm happy you're here.

I'm with the letter writer suggestions. Put it in a card and she can display the card without the letter being read by everyone. I'm glad she has you as an example of how life can be from where she is now.

God put you in her life for a reason. God will allow you to say the things to her she needs to hear at the right time.

(hug) Because I know this brought back a lot of memories for you. We love you, too, you know? XOXO

I just wanted to add my voice to the others - look for another opportunity - ask God for it! Or write a letter. She may have her families attention right now..but life will get tough again!
I'll be praying!

Thank you to all you guys. Nice comments and fantastic suggestions, I will definitely write to her, especially since she will be locked up for a while on Oahu with no one to visit.

Hi Sandy, I know that I am late to post on this but I am so sorry for your friend! It is so sad when you find that someone close to you has been hurting so badly that they would want to end their life. My sister has tried to kill herself several times. It is so hard to when you feel like you are supposed to "save" them. You are an awesome person. Who knows, maybe you went through your experiences so that you could better relate to and help her through hers. I hope that she gets back to feeling better. Take care,Zoe

Oh, yes! I agee. Be a witness to her. HOw wonderful that she has someone like you to lift her up and encourage her.

I am late to this too...somehow I missed this post...weird. I read you every day, so not sure why I didn't see it.

Hugs to you and your friend.

I'm coming in late here, but I just wanted to thank you for telling this story. And I'm certain that if and when you do share your feelings and thoughts with her, she will never forget and will appreciate it more than anything. How is she doing?

Thanks for your comments, care, and concern. She is at a hospital on O'ahu. her mother was able to visit with her on Monday. Our ss class is taking up a collection to send her flowers. I'll send her a letter too.
